What's it LIKE to WORK in the NATIONAL POLICE? | HACKER COPS

We keep exploring cybersecurity professions, and today it’s one many people wonder about: the one from the inside. I’m joined by Carlos Loureiro, of the National Police Corps and coordinator of CiberWorld, the initiative born at the National Police Academy.

Carlos explains that in the Police they touch almost every field: forensics, but also predictive policing like VeriPol for false reports, risk assessment in gender-based violence, or cryptocurrency tracing. We go over how you get in (competitive exam, academy and internship, a good year and a half, with salaries that are public) and he makes clear that you need two vocations at once, service to the public and keeping up to date in cyber.

We talk about the good relationship with the Guardia Civil and its National Cyber League, and about two things that strike me as key. One, that the great challenge with ransomware isn’t detecting the attack but attribution, putting a name and surname to it on a legal basis. And two, that those supposed legal obstacles aren’t obstacles, they’re safeguards: the line drawn by the law is what ensures the investigation succeeds without trampling anyone’s rights. No compromising a server without a court order.
