We’re launching a new format with the channel’s first round table, and to kick it off I brought together four veterans who have been wrestling with this since the nineties. We began, as it could only be, with streaming problems and a five-minute wait. House style.

Sitting down with me are Roman Ramírez, coordinator of RootedCON, Nicolás Castellano, of NoConName, Martín Vigo, of the podcast Tierra de Hackers and now a red teamer in the United States, and the CISO of an international gaming company. We reminisce about MSX machines, the Amstrad, IRC and the phone bills, and we agree that the turning point came when hacking started to be monetised, with Zeus and the first ransomware. Roman speaks his mind about the talent shortage: he argues that what’s missing is decent pay, and points out that the most typical salary in cybersecurity is around twenty-four thousand euros according to the SEPE.

We close by looking to the future, between supply chain, privacy, deepfakes and smart contracts. The advice for those starting out was unanimous: do it for passion, and if you’re after real money, you know where the door is. A conversation with a lot of brains per square metre.
