The CyberWeek with the Captain | Ep. 1

You’re walking down the street, you cross paths with a stranger wearing ordinary-looking glasses and, without you opening your mouth, that stranger already knows your name, where you studied, what you do for a living and how many years you lived in Galicia. It’s not science fiction or the next episode of Black Mirror: it’s what some students in the United States pulled off tinkering with a pair of Meta glasses. In this first episode of The CyberWeek I sit down with the Captain to pick the experiment apart.

The glasses have no special magic. The camera records, the image is sent to the internet and out there waits everything we’ve been giving away for years: photos, profiles, posts, traces. Facial recognition does the rest and hands you your own life back in real time. The problem, as almost always, isn’t the gadget. It’s us and what we expose. We also talk about OSINT and work like the experiment Andres Naranjo did, pulling data from apps to reconstruct people’s identities. Don’t panic: building this isn’t within everyone’s reach. But the picture is already taken, and it isn’t a flattering one.
