Do COMPUTER ENGINEERS know about CYBERSECURITY?

When someone wants to work in cybersecurity and has no idea where to start, the first thing that comes to mind is usually the same phrase: computer engineering. But does that degree really help you end up working in cyber? To answer it I sit down with someone with the authority to do so, Fernando Suarez, president of the Professional Association of Computer Engineering of Galicia and of the General Council of Computer Engineering.

Fernando studied the old degree, has spent more than twenty-five years in the sector, much of it in the public sphere, and seventeen years ago took the step into professional representation. With that background, we start with the basics, what engineering actually is. I liked his definition for its simplicity: using ingenuity to find solutions to complex problems, something that applies equally to the naval, the industrial or the computing world. From there we jump to what matters to a beginner. How much weight cybersecurity carries within the degree, why computing is one of the youngest engineering fields and what path makes sense if what you want is to learn cyber from scratch.
